When first discussing designs for this 18th century Commedia dell’Arte play, the director and I wanted to create a look that was fun and more contemporary, a blend of modern with 18th century details as a nod to the period of the original text. The design created looks that use modern pieces with some specific little historical details, finding in my research contemporary pieces inspired by 18th century clothing.  In keeping with the play’s roots, the unifying theme for the costumes is the diamond pattern from the traditional Harlequin costume of the Commedia dell’Arte.  Mixing patterns with stripes and lots and lots of color reinforces the zaniness of Goldoni’s play.  The costumes are fun, they’re bright, they’re ridiculous.  This is one design where it doesn’t matter if the costumes clash with each other!  Does it all make sense?  No, not really, but the main purpose of Goldoni’s play is simply to make the audience laugh.
